TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police deployed 611 joint personnel to secure a student demonstration to reject a 12 percent increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) in the Horse Statue area, Central Jakarta, Friday, December 27, 2024.
"The joint personnel are from Polda Metro Jaya, Central Jakarta Metro Police, TNI, DKI Regional Government and related agencies," said Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro in his written statement.
Susatyo said these police personnel will be placed at several points around the Monas Horse Statue roundabout in front of the State Palace. Starting from the Sapta Pesona Building area (Gambir), as many as 165 personnel, the Southwest Monas crossing as many as 115 personnel, then at the State Palace 92 personnel, to around Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat. "They are also tasked with preventing the protesters from entering the State Palace area," he said.
Susatyo said that the closure or diversion of traffic flows around the Monas Horse Statue roundabout and several other locations due to the demonstration against the 12 percent VAT was situational according to the field situation.
The police appealed to the field coordinator (korlap) and orators to conduct speeches politely and not provoke the masses. He hopes the demonstration will be carried out peacefully and not impose its will. "No anarchy and no damage to public facilities. Respect and appreciate other road users who will pass at the Monas Horse Statue roundabout and several other locations," said Susatyo.
According to his statement, none of the personnel involved in security carry weapons. He is committed to security being carried out persuasively, not provoking or being provoked, and prioritizing negotiations. "And still respect the action masses who will express their opinions," he said.
The action against the 12 percent VAT increase will be followed by the Islamic Student Association (HMI) throughout Jakarta at the Southwest Monas Crossing or in front of the Horse Statue at 13.00 WIB, and the All Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) at 15.00 WIB.
Previously, the government officially increased the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate to 12 percent starting January 1, 2025. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that the determination of 12 percent VAT follows Law (UU) Number 7 of 2021 concerning Harmonization of Tax Regulations (HPP).
"In accordance with the mandate of the Law on Harmonization of Tax Regulations, this is in accordance with the predetermined schedule, the VAT rate next year will increase by 12 percent as of January 1 (2025)," Airlangga said at a press conference on the Economic Policy Package in Jakarta, Monday, December 16, 2024.
