TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police are still investigating the cause of recent spills of liquid caustic soda that occurred on the Purwakarta-Padalarang Road in Cimahi, West Java on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
Cimahi Police Chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Tri Suhartanto, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. When questioned about the possibility of the chemical leak being attributed to a non-compliant tanker truck, Tri stated, “Let the experts determine the cause.”
Tri explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the leak originated from a tanker truck transporting liquid caustic soda from Karawang to Bandung. “The leak began in the Cigentur area of Cikalong Wetan District and continued to Cikamuning,” he said. The spilled caustic soda affected approximately 8 kilometers of the roadway.
Tri further noted that the leak was evident while the truck was traveling from Purwakarta. However, the situation worsened due to rain, causing the caustic soda to mix with rainwater and splash onto passing motorists.
Regarding potential negligence on the part of the truck driver, Tri emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. “The driver is currently being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation,” he added.
The incident has resulted in numerous casualties among drivers and vehicle occupants. “We are currently compiling a list of victims and assessing the extent of the damage,” Tri stated.
As of today, approximately 30 individuals with minor injuries, such as abrasions, irritation, and itching, have been released from the hospital. One individual with moderate injuries remains under observation at the Cikalong Wetan Regional General Hospital.
Previously, Tri reported that the number of victims had reached the hundreds. “Four individuals sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital,” Tri said in an official statement released by the Cimahi Police on their Instagram account @cimahipolres on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
The caustic soda spill has garnered significant attention on social media platforms, particularly on X. Numerous accounts have shared information about the incident, including the impact on road conditions and drivers.
A video circulating online depicts the tanker truck and the extent of the leak. A man, believed to be the driver, is seen displaying a look of concern, seemingly helpless to stop the substantial leak. The video shows the liquid contaminating one lane of the road and entering nearby drainage channels.
