TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Maluku Regional Police conducted interviews with 24 witnesses in the incident of a burning speedboat that claimed the lives of six people, including the North Maluku gubernatorial candidate Benny Laos. Personnel from the General Crimes Directorate of the North Maluku Regional Police were dispatched to Taliabu to assist in the investigation.
"North Maluku Police desire to conduct a quick, transparent, and thorough investigation to obtain testimonies from witnesses and electronic evidence to uncover the facts behind the burning of the Bella 72 speedboat," stated the Head of Public Relations of the North Maluku Regional Police, Chief Commissioner Bambang Suharyono in Ternate on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Investigators have secured evidence such as debris samples of the speedboat for examination at the Forensic Laboratory Center of the Indonesian National Police and the development of the investigation.
Bambang Suharyono urged the public to remain calm in responding to this incident and not to speculate, which could damage the values of unity. Trust the police to handle the case. Support from the community is needed to create a conducive security situation during this election campaign phase.
According to Bambang, out of the six deceased victims, two have been taken to the Sula Islands, Esther Tantry (member of the North Maluku Provincial DPRD) and the police escort of the Sula Islands Regent Candidate, Brigadier Hamdani Boamonabot.
Two others are the Chairperson of the North Maluku United Development Party DPW Mubin A. Wahid and Nasrun, whose bodies were taken to the city of Ternate. One victim named Mahsudin Ode Muisi, his body has been taken by the family in Taliabu, and Benny Laos's body will be flown to Jakarta for burial.
As for the data on lightly injured victims undergoing treatment at the Regional Public Hospital, there are 10 people, namely Sherly Tjoanda, Hendrata Thes, Amir, Ajam, Irsan, Sance, Dian Jurak, Faisal, Susianto, and Mariana Meskopa.
