TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, far eastern Russia, in the early hours of Friday. As reported by Al Arabiya, the earthquake shook buildings and prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning.
A video uploaded on Russian social media showed furniture and lights in houses trembling. Another video showed parked cars swaying back and forth on the road.
The earthquake occurred 128 kilometers east of the region's capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The quake was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The local branch of Russia's geophysical service estimated the earthquake's magnitude to be 7.4. Russia reported at least five aftershocks.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning about the possibility of dangerous waves along the nearest coastline. "This morning is once again testing the resilience of Kamchatka residents," said the local governor, Vladimir Solodov, via Telegram.
"There are currently no reports of damage. I ask everyone to remain calm... A tsunami warning has been issued for the east coast of the peninsula. The public is being alerted," he said.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is located in the tectonic belt known as the Ring of Fire, which encircles much of the Pacific Ocean. The region is a hot spot for seismic activity. In July, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the region, triggering a tsunami that swept parts of coastal villages into the sea.
Tsunami warnings were also issued for some parts of the Kuril Islands chain, north of Japan. As reported by Al Jazeera, the U.S. National Weather Service and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami warnings for parts of Alaska after the earthquake. However, the warnings have since been lifted.
