TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has asked his cabinet ministers to work together to achieve food and energy self-sufficiency during his 2024-2029 term.
According to the President, self-sufficiency in food and energy is necessary to strengthen Indonesia's position in the current uncertain global geopolitical situation.
"We must be self-sufficient in food; this is a basic priority because if we look at the current global situation, a major war can break out at any time," he said in his speech at the first plenary session of the Merah and Putih Cabinet at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, Oct. 23, Antara reported.
"We must guarantee our ability to feed our own people. Energy self-sufficiency is absolute," he added.
He noted that Indonesia has abundant natural resources to support food self-sufficiency. This potential must be utilized wisely through downstream industries. Prabowo also hopes his cabinet ministers will pursue the downstream program to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
He emphasized that several ministries, such as the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming, the Ministry of National Development Planning, and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, are responsible for downstream implementation to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
In the future, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Chairman of the National Economic Council could also help make an inventory of major projects for the downstream program.
"(We currently have) 26 major resource projects; these are resources that need to be downstreamed immediately. Make a list and we will immediately seek funds so that we can start downstreaming in the shortest possible time," Prabowo said.
Food, energy, and water self-sufficiency are among Prabowo's 17 priority Astacita programs.
Downstreaming natural resources is seen as key to achieving food, energy, and water self-sufficiency in Indonesia, which would benefit the people.
