TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurates 166 People's Schools spread across 34 provinces, on Monday, January 12, 2026. Prabowo inaugurates the People's School at the Great Hall of Social Welfare Education and Training (BBPPKS) in the city of Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan Province.
Prabowo and his entourage took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta at 08:30 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). During the flight to Banjarbaru, Prabowo was accompanied by the State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Foreign Minister Sugiono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Prabowo and his entourage arrived in Banjarbaru at around 11:00 AM WITA (Central Indonesian Time).
Upon arrival in Banjarbaru, Prabowo immediately headed to BBPPKS. Citing a written statement from the Presidential Secretariat, the inauguration of the People's School is part of the state's commitment to expanding inclusive and equitable access to education.
Today's inauguration event is said to be not only a symbol of physical educational infrastructure development, but also the state's commitment to the quality of human resources. The People's School is claimed to be a suitable, affordable, and inclusive learning space, as well as an instrument to break the chain of poverty through education.
Since its phased operation in July-September 2025, the People's School has been established at 166 locations with a capacity of more than 15,000 students. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works (PU) will continue the construction of Phase II of the People's School at 104 locations across Indonesia. Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that the People's School is a long-term investment in human resource development.
"The construction of the People's School is a tangible form of the government's commitment to build excellent human resources. The Ministry of Public Works wants to ensure that this educational facility is built quickly and with high quality," said Dody in a written statement on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
In Phase II, Dody mentioned that the People's School is designed to accommodate 112,320 students through 3,744 study groups. The breakdown consists of 1,872 elementary school study groups, 936 junior high school study groups, and 936 senior high school study groups.
Each location has a capacity of 1,080 students, including 540 elementary school students, 270 junior high school students, and 270 senior high school students. "There are 36 study groups available at each location," said Dody.
Dody explained that the construction of Phase II of the People's School is spread across various regions. There are 26 locations in Sumatra and 40 in Java. Kalimantan is spread across 12 locations and there are 16 locations in Sulawesi.
In addition, the Maluku Islands receive four locations and Papua three locations. Bali and Nusa Tenggara each have one location. All schools are built on 5 to 10 hectares of land provided by local governments.
