TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has permitted the Agriculture Ministry and the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs to export rice abroad.
He announced during a speech at the Gerakan Indonesia Menanam (Indonesia Planting Movement) event initiated by Ustadz Adi Hidayat in Sungai Pinang Village, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
Prabowo explained that the decision was made after receiving reports from the Agriculture Ministry and the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs regarding requests from several countries hoping Indonesia could supply rice, as the land is currently experiencing a production surplus.
"I permit and instruct that rice be sent to them (other countries)," said Prabowo, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman and Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan.
Prabowo emphasized that the rice exports must be carried out on humanitarian grounds, not merely for economic profit. According to him, Indonesia will not seek to profit from the shipments.
"What matters is that production, transportation, and administrative costs can be recovered," Prabowo said.
According to the President, this move demonstrates that Indonesia has become a self-reliant nation capable of assisting other countries in need.
“We are proving that Indonesia is no longer a nation that begs, but a nation that can help and give to others,” Prabowo asserted.
