TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed that Indonesia will not join any foreign military or defense alliance, stressing the country’s long-standing non-aligned foreign policy amid growing global tensions.
Prabowo made the remarks during a briefing at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of central and regional governments at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC) in Bogor, West Java, on Monday, February 2, 2026.
He opened his address by warning of the potential threat of a third world war, noting that Indonesia would still feel the impact even if it were not directly involved in the conflict.
Despite these risks, Prabowo said Indonesia would remain committed to an independent and active foreign policy and would not align itself with any military bloc.
“Independent and active, but non-aligned and non-bloc. We will not join any military pact,” he told participants at the meeting.
Prabowo acknowledged that such a stance carries significant consequences, including the possibility of limited external support if Indonesia were to come under attack.
“If we truly choose to be non-aligned and stay out of pacts, then if we are threatened or attacked, no one will come to our aid,” he said.
As president, Prabowo said he bears the responsibility of protecting the nation through difficult and sometimes emotionally charged decisions. He emphasized that Indonesia must confront geopolitical realities pragmatically rather than rely solely on idealism.
“We cannot afford to be emotional. What matters is the real world,” said Prabowo, who also serves as chair of the Gerindra Party.
