TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the current regional disaster emergency status is sufficient to handle the floods and landslides affecting Sumatra Island.

“We continue to monitor the situation. I believe the current measures are adequate,” Prabowo said during a visit to Tapanuli Tengah Regency, North Sumatra, on Monday, December 1, 2025.

He noted that there were no additional instructions for the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) or the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), emphasizing that both agencies follow established disaster response procedures.

“It is now up to the government to deploy all available resources to ensure a swift response,” he added.

Prabowo praised the speed of the response, saying, “BNPB is responding quickly, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) are very fast, and the National Police (Polri) is also rapid. We have also deployed several helicopters, Hercules aircraft, and other planes.”

Despite the mounting death toll, which has surpassed 400, the government has not declared a national disaster status for the affected provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Lieutenant General Suharyanto, Head of BNPB, reported that as of Sunday, November 30, 2025, the total deaths in the three provinces reached 442, with 402 people still missing.

“The joint team from BNPB, TNI, Police, Basarnas, government ministries, and local authorities continues to accelerate search and rescue operations, provide aid and logistics, and restore access to affected areas,” Suharyanto said during a press briefing at the National Support Post in Silangit Airport, Tapanuli Utara.

In North Sumatra, 217 people have been confirmed dead, following the recovery of previously missing individuals. Fatalities are reported across Tapanuli Tengah, Tapanuli Selatan, Sibolga City, Tapanuli Utara, Humbang Hasundutan, Pakpak Barat, Padang Sidempuan City, Deli Serdang, and Nias. The number of missing persons has risen to 209 as families continue to report loved ones unaccounted for.

Aceh Province recorded 96 deaths and 75 missing across 11 regencies and cities, including Bener Meriah, Aceh Tengah, Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, Aceh Tenggara, Aceh Utara, Aceh Timur, Lhokseumawe, Gayo Lues, Subulussalam, and Nagan Raya. The province has approximately 62,000 displaced households.

West Sumatra has reported 129 deaths, 118 missing, and 16 injured, with victims scattered across Agam Regency, Padang Panjang City, Padang City, Padang Pariaman, Tanah Datar, Pasaman Barat, Pasaman, Solok, Solok City, and Pesisir Selatan.
