TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to extend Indonesia’s Whoosh high-speed train, currently operating between Jakarta and Bandung, all the way to Banyuwangi on the eastern tip of Java Island. The move would mark a major expansion of Southeast Asia’s first high-speed rail network.

Prabowo revealed the plan after inaugurating the newly renovated Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in response to questions from reporters about the project’s progress.

“God willing, not just to Surabaya but all the way to Banyuwangi. Surabaya was in the past—now it’s Banyuwangi,” Prabowo said.

The president emphasized that the development of modern transportation infrastructure such as the Whoosh line should not stop midway. He highlighted the broader social, economic, and environmental benefits that the high-speed rail would bring, outweighing the financial costs that have drawn public debate.

“In essence, there’s no problem. We might spend around Rp 1.2 trillion per year, but the benefits—reducing traffic congestion, cutting pollution, and shortening travel time—must be considered,” Prabowo said.

He also described the project as a symbol of cooperation between Indonesia and China, and a key step toward transferring modern transportation technology to Indonesia.

“What matters is that we master the technology. We’re reaching the edge of best practices. And remember, this project stands as a symbol of our partnership with China,” he said.

Responding to concerns about the debt burden associated with the Whoosh project, Prabowo stressed that he, as head of state, takes full responsibility for ensuring its sustainability.

He asserted that Indonesia has the financial capacity to manage the project without placing an undue burden on the State Budget (APBN).

“As President of the Republic of Indonesia, I will take full responsibility. So, there’s no need for further debate. We are capable and strong,” Prabowo said.
