TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto is exploring cooperation in the education sector with leading universities in the United Kingdom, as part of his official visit to London aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Indonesia and the UK.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said one of Prabowo’s key agendas is to assess potential partnerships with universities under the Russell Group, a consortium of 24 of the UK’s most prestigious institutions.

The discussions include the possibility of establishing branch campuses in Indonesia.

“The president is reviewing opportunities for collaboration with Russell Group universities, including plans to open new campuses in Indonesia,” Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The Russell Group includes globally renowned universities such as the University of Birmingham, the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, Imperial College London, and the University of Oxford.

Prasetyo said the proposed cooperation is intended to help Indonesia address gaps in several strategic fields, particularly science, technology, and medicine.

Beyond education, Prabowo’s UK visit also includes the signing of a maritime partnership agreement. According to Prasetyo, the cooperation focuses on building fishing vessels to support Indonesian fishermen.

Another item on Prabowo’s agenda in London involves discussions on elephant conservation in Aceh Province.

Prasetyo noted that around eight months ago, Prabowo, in a personal capacity prior to assuming the presidency, handed over forest concession land belonging to PT Tusam Hutani Lestari to the government.

“The land will be converted into a wildlife conservation corridor for elephants, in cooperation with Prince Charles,” Prasetyo said.

Prabowo arrived in London on Sunday, January 18, 2026, local time, to begin a series of official engagements aimed at strengthening Indonesia–UK relations.

According to the Presidential Secretariat, he was welcomed at London Stansted Airport by Deputy Lieutenant of Essex Mark Bevan, the UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative Adele Taylor MBE, Indonesian Ambassador to the UK Desra Percaya, UK Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey, and Indonesia’s Defense Attaché to the UK, Wiyata S. Aji.

During his visit, Prabowo is scheduled to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III. He will later continue his overseas trip to Switzerland.
