TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to sign an MoU for a maritime partnership agreement on fishing vessel construction during his working visit to London, United Kingdom.
Indonesia, said State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, is short of tens of thousands of fishing vessels. Hence, the government is open to partnership opportunities in the maritime sector, both foreign and domestic collaborations.
"To increase the number of fishing vessels we have," said Prasetyo at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026.
According to the Gerindra Party politician, the maritime partnership aims to boost the economy and "help fishers and protect fishery resources" for the benefit of the nation.
In addition to the maritime sector, Prabowo also plans to explore cooperation in the education sector with various leading universities in the UK. According to Prasetyo, Prabowo is scheduled to attend meetings to finalize cooperation with several universities under the Russell Group.
The Russell Group oversees 24 prestigious campuses in the UK. Some of the member universities include the University of Birmingham, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Imperial College London, and the University of Oxford.
Another item on Prabowo’s agenda in London involves discussions on elephant conservation in Aceh Province.
Prasetyo noted that around eight months ago, Prabowo, in a personal capacity prior to assuming the presidency, handed over forest concession land belonging to PT Tusam Hutani Lestari to the government.
“The land will be converted into a wildlife conservation corridor for elephants, in cooperation with Prince Charles,” Prasetyo said.
Earlier, Prabowo Subianto arrived at London Stansted Airport, UK, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, local time, to begin a series of official visits aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and strategic partnerships between Indonesia and the United Kingdom.
Prabowo landed at London Stansted Airport, where he was welcomed by Deputy Lieutenant of Essex Mark Bevan, the UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative Adele Taylor MBE, Indonesian Ambassador to the UK Desra Percaya, British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey, and Indonesia’s Defense Attaché to the UK, Wiyata S. Aji, according to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.
During this visit, Prabowo is scheduled to meet with the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III. After visiting the UK, Prabowo will continue his visit to Switzerland. He is scheduled to deliver a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Quoting the official World Economic Forum website, Prabowo's special address is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 02:00 p.m. to 02:30 p.m. local time, sharing the stage with WEF President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Economic Forum, Børge Brende.
