TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Russian National Security Secretary Sergei Shoigu, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at midday.
As observed by Tempo at the location, Prabowo, dressed in a gray suit with a blue tie, awaited Shoigu's arrival at the entrance of the Merdeka Palace at around 12:50 PM local time. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin accompanied the President.
From the Merdeka Palace grounds, Shoigu, wearing a black suit with a blue tie and a white shirt underneath, walked along a light blue carpet towards the entrance.
The trusted aide of Putin walked amidst a line of presidential security personnel standing at attention. Shoigu's arrival was heralded by music from the presidential security personnel marching band.
Upon reaching the entrance, Prabowo shook hands with Shoigu, saying, "Thank you for coming," to Shoigu.
They then entered the living room of the Merdeka Palace. Prabowo once again thanked Shoigu for his visit. According to Prabowo, Shoigu is a long-time friend.
"I am very pleased that you, Your Excellency, have come here, but your time here is short. I would like to host a splendid banquet, but unfortunately, time is short," said Prabowo.
Prabowo then inquired about President Putin's well-being. Shoigu replied that Putin is in good health.
In the room, Prabowo was accompanied by the Defense Minister and the Cabinet Secretary, Teddy Indra Wijaya. At the time of this report, both parties were engaged in closed-door discussions.
Before heading to the Merdeka Palace, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin received Shoigu at the Defense Ministry office in Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
Shoigu arrived at the Defense Ministry complex around 11:00 AM local time. Sjafrie greeted him before they participated in an honor guard ceremony. Shoigu is on a visit to Indonesia and Malaysia, which will last until February 28, 2025. Reuters cited this information from the Russian news agency RIA, sourced from the Russian National Security Council press office.
During the visit, Shoigu is scheduled to discuss various important issues in the bilateral relationship between Russia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Topics of discussion include security and defense, and opportunities for cooperation in other areas of mutual interest.
Shoigu has served as the secretary of the Russian National Security Council since May 13, 2024. Previously, he held the position of the Russian Defense Minister from 2012 to 2024 and served as the Governor of Moscow Oblast in 2012.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has faced various sanctions from Western countries supporting Kyiv. This has led Russian President Vladimir Putin to increasingly focus on strengthening relations with countries in the Asian region.
