TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto attended the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Defense on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. The position previously held by Prabowo will be assumed by Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
The handover ceremony was performed in a military manner. Hundreds of soldiers and reserve command troops were deployed in formation in front of the Ministry of Defense office, Jl. Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta.
Prabowo arrived at the Ministry of Defense complex at 1:55 p.m. Jakarta time. Other state officials and retired military personnel also observed the ceremony. Prabowo's former wife, Siti Hediati Hariyadi, or Titiek Soeharto, was also seen attending the ceremony, arriving at 2:05 p.m.
The new Minister of Defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin
Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin is not a new figure in the defense field. He previously served as Special Assistant to the Minister of Defense for Defense Management since December 6, 2019. At that time, the Minister of Defense was Prabowo Subianto.
Sjafrie is a retired Indonesian National Army (TNI) officer with the rank of Lieutenant General. He served from 1974 until his retirement in 2010.
During his service, Sjafrie was part of the Special Forces Command (Kopassus) Infantry unit. He is notable for his roles in the Seroja Operation in East Timor, military operations in Aceh, and conflicts in Papua.
Sjafrie was a friend of Prabowo during their time as Army cadets at the Tidar Valley Military Academy in Magelang. Sjafrie entered the academy in 1971, while Prabowo a year earlier. However, Sjafrie and Prabowo graduated together in 1974.
Upon graduation, Sjafrie had a long career in Kopassus. He served as Chief of Staff of the Jakarta Regional Military Command in 1996 and the Commander of the Jaya Regional Military Command the following year. He held that position until the 1998 riots in Jakarta. Sjafrie also served as the Head of the TNI Information Center in 2002.
During President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration, Sjafrie also held the position of Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense. He also served as the Commander of the Presidential Security Force (Paspampres) during the Soeharto presidency.
