TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Budiman Sudjatmiko, the head of the Poverty Alleviation Acceleration Agency, said President Prabowo Subianto will continue the social assistance program. He reaffirmed that Prabowo’s top priority is poverty alleviation.
"God willing, social assistance will continue, as it’s Pak Prabowo and Mas Gibran’s campaign promise,” he said after his inauguration at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. “We are adding elderly cards as well.”
"So, the program will continue, but it’s not just direct cash assistance. We will also enhance access to non-cash assets. That’s just as important for poor people,” he explained.
Budiman was inaugurated by Prabowo based on Presidential Decree Number 145-P of 2024, with Nanik Sudaryati Deyang and Iwan Sumule as his deputy heads.
"This is a poverty alleviation agency, not just a mitigation program. Mitigating the problem would be akin to giving aspirin, but Pak Prabowo requested a more fundamental approach. So, for us, poor people must be empowered, and those at risk of poverty must be rescued," explained Budiman.
The distribution of social assistance was one of the disputed matters in the 2024 presidential election. Former President Jokowi was accused of implementing this policy to benefit Prabowo and Gibran.
The Constitutional Court dismissed Jokowi’s alleged manipulation in a hearing earlier this year. The government repeatedly argued that the rice aid was a response to a price hike caused by global food inflation.
The Jokowi government has decided to continue the distribution of rice assistance in August, November, and December 2024. During a visit to a Bulog Warehouse in Kampung Baru, West Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday, October 2, Jokowi invited residents to advise the new Prabowo-led government to continue the program.
