TEMPO.CO, JakartaHasjim Djalal, a senior diplomat and internationally recognized Indonesian maritime law expert, passed away at the age of 90 in Jakarta on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Hasjim Djalal breathed his last at 16:40 WIB and was surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings. Hasjim Djalal's second son is also a diplomat and former Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal. He was the one who announced his father's death.

"Please pray that his soul will receive a noble place in the sight of Allah SWT and that his services to the Republic of Indonesia will always be remembered well. Amen," said Dino via a post on social media.

Hasjim Djalal will be buried today at the Heroes' Cemetery, Monday, January 13, 2025. He was born on February 25, 1934 in Ampek Angkek, Agam, West Sumatra. As reported by Antara, the University of Virginia graduate was blessed with three children, namely Dino Patti Djalal, Iwan Djalal and Dini Djalal. He received a Master of Law degree from the University of Virginia, where he was the first Indonesian student at the university.

Hasjim has had a fairly brilliant career. He is also known as a pioneer of Indonesian diplomacy who was able to raise the nation's image in the eyes of the world. He served as the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations in 1981-1983.

Then in 1983-1985 he devoted himself as the Indonesian Ambassador to Canada and in 1990-1993 became the Indonesian Ambassador to Germany. Hasjim is known to be one of the Indonesian diplomats who played a role in the preparation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which was ratified in 1982.

According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Hasjim Djalal together with the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs at that time, Mochtar Kusumaatmadja. He fought for the idea of an archipelagic state and the archipelagic outlook, as mandated by the Juanda Declaration, to be recognized by the international community.

During his life, Hasjim Djalal did a lot of work through launching books and serving Indonesia. He wrote the books Indonesian Struggle for the Law of the Sea (1979), Indonesia and the Law of the Sea (1995) and Preventive Diplomacy in Southeast Asia: Lesson Learned (2003).

After retiring, he was still actively writing books and articles in various media and becoming a speaker at various forums on international maritime law issues. His son, Dino Patti Djalal, continued his father's footsteps as an accomplished diplomat, by becoming Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the United States since 2010.
