Bank of Indonesia (BI) officially launched the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) between Indonesia and Japan today, Monday, August 25, 2025. The launch took place simultaneously in Jakarta and Osaka, Japan. Despite being officially launched today, QRIS has been available in Japan since August 17, 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that this launch opens a new chapter for the cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, where the economic relations between the two countries become smoother and digitally connected. Consequently, bilateral transactions can be easily conducted without any obstacles.

Perry mentioned that 500 thousand tourists, both from Indonesia and Japan, no longer need to use yen or rupiah in their transactions. "Wherever they go, to Okachimachi, Donki, Shibuya, wherever, they will only need a handphone to use QRIS," Perry said in his speech in Jakarta, quoted from Bank Indonesia's YouTube live broadcast, Monday, August 25, 2025.

In the same event, Minister at Japan Embassy in Indonesia Ueda Hajime mentioned that the number of Indonesian tourists and businessmen going to Japan continues to increase. According to him, during their stay in Indonesia, QRIS has become an easy and convenient payment method.

In the initial stage, Indonesian citizens can use QRIS at 35 merchants in Japan by scanning JPQR Global using domestic payment applications. In the next phase, JPQR will also be available in Indonesia.

Hajime noted that the number of Indonesian workers in Japan has significantly increased to 150 million people. Additionally, the number of Indonesian students in Japan has doubled in the past decade.

"With this cross-border payment system, I hope they can use the payment method without worrying about language and currency differences," Hajime stated.

Currently, QRIS can be used in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. As of June 2025, Bank Indonesia recorded the volume of QRIS cross-border transactions with Thailand reaching 994,890 transactions with a value of Rp 437.54 billion. Then, the volume of QRIS transactions between Indonesia and Malaysia reached 4.31 million transactions with a value of Rp 1.15 trillion. Meanwhile, the volume of QRIS transactions between Singapore and Indonesia reached 238,216 transactions with a value of Rp 77.06 billion.
