TEMPO.CO, Batam - Residents of Rempang Island from various villages held a post-Eid gathering, locally known as halalbihalal, in the Sembulang Pasir Merah Village, Sembulang Subdistrict, Galang District, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
Attended by hundreds of residents—including women, men, young people, and children—the people reiterated their rejection of the local transmigration plan.
The general coordinator of the United Rempang Galang Community Alliance (AMAR-GB), Ishak, delivered the opening speech, expressing gratitude, support, and solidarity among Rempang people to protect the villages, as well as encouraging forgiveness between the residents.
"Hopefully, the halalbihalal event sparks a more united front among us to fight and stand tall in guarding our living space in Rempang Island,” said the resident of the Pasir Panjang Village.
Ishak affirmed that the post-Eid gathering is aimed at bolstering the struggle of the Rempang residents affected by the Rempang Eco City National Strategic Project (PSN). "So, if outsiders claim that Rempang has ceased to exist, or the residents have accepted the relocation, it’s not true, and we rebuke the claim,” he said. “The people of Rempang remain united to this day.”
Afterward, residents representing various villages took turns speaking about their rejection of the Rempang Eco City project. "We must stay vigilant, and not let our guard down, as infiltrators may enter the village," said Siti Hawa, a woman who defends her village in Rempang.
“Especially the local transmigration plan, never let our guard down, it’s dangerous,” she added.
The residents also invited speakers and guests to the gathering, including Ahmad Fauzi, a member of the National Solidarity Advocacy Team for Rempang.
Fauzi said this event is a moment for residents to support each other because the struggle cannot be done alone. "The residents of Pasir Merah Village cannot possibly survive alone, so if yesterday there were disagreements among villages, this is a moment to forgive each other," he said.
To conclude the post-Eid gathering, the residents held a rally. They collectively unfurled banners containing messages of the struggle to preserve their village on Rempang Island. Calls to reject eviction, local transmigration, and destructive development echoed among the people.
