TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - A cave was discovered in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, during the construction of the southern trans-java route, temporarily halting the ongoing road construction.
The cave was found underground in Planjan Village, Saptosari, Gunungkidul Regency, on October 15, 2024. Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is asked to study and map the stalactites and stalagmites-filled cave.
"Standard operating procedures require preliminary research on the spatial distribution of the cave," said Professor from the Faculty of Geography at UGM, Eko Haryono, on Monday, October 21.
Eko mentioned that cave discovery is common in Gunungkidul due to its karst structure, necessitating adjustment of any road construction project to the cave’s spatial reach.
In November, Eko and his team of experts plan to start mapping the cave. "Once the cave's distribution is known, the road design needs to be modified or swerved," he said.
Eko added that this cave has the potential to become a tourist attraction, but the carrying capacity and daily visitor capability of the cave must be known first. "Later on, we will examine this from a geological and geophysical perspective by measuring temperature and the CO2 level. Air circulation must be ensured for safety first," he said.
The Head of the Gunungkidul Environmental Office, Harry Sukmono, stated that the Yogyakarta palace, or locally known as keraton, has also visited the cave. The Environmental Office is still awaiting the research schedule to be carried out by the university.
The cave discovery prompted quite a stir among locals, with residents coming and attempting to take photos in the cave. Harry said the cave entrance is temporarily closed.
"Gusti Mangkubumi instructed to wait for the results of the study first to determine whether to continue the trace and if it’s available for tourism in the future, albeit from afar,” he added.
