TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rome’s Balloon Museum is bringing Pop Air to Singapore. The exhibition, featuring towering inflatables, dramatic lighting and inspiring installations, will be held at Marina Bay Sands from 13 June to 31 August 2025.

Visitors will not only enjoy the art, but can also explore a balloon maze and dive into a bubble pool, and learn about the evolution of inflatable art in a video gallery. The video gallery will take visitors on a journey through early experiments by the Montgolfier brothers, contemporary icons such as Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog, and more.

Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier were two French brothers who were pioneers in the development of hot air balloons and performed the first untethered flight. Modifications and improvements to Montgolfier’s basic design were incorporated into the creation of larger balloons that eventually paved the way for exploration of the upper atmosphere.

The exhibition at Marina Bay Sands will feature stunning installations and artworks from inflatable artists such as Cyril Lancelin with his clover knot balloon design called Knot, Karina Smigla-Bobinski with her POLYHEADRA artwork, an intricate display of PVC tubes and magnetic rings, and the team at Hyperstudio in collaboration with Quiet Ensemble presenting the main installation Hypercosmo. Hypercosmo is a 1,000 square meter exhibition featuring latex balloons, kinetic lights and video projections.

Getting to Know the Balloon Museum

The world’s first Balloon Museum opened in Rome in 2021 with an art exhibition titled Let’s Fly. The museum is housed in a former bus depot in the Prati district, near the Vatican. Unlike traditional museums, where touching the exhibits is a crime, here even playing with the exhibits is allowed.

The artworks on display are diverse. For example, there is a room filled with colorful balloons hanging against a backdrop of psychedelic music and brightly colored lights. Visitors also have the chance to discover their inner child and dive into a pool filled with hundreds of small, clear balls. There are also giant inflatable sculptures that double as playgrounds for children, installations that can only be moved by riding a bicycle, and an army tank made of colorful birthday balloons.
