TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Multi-billionaire Elon Musk has affirmed that he is not interested in taking over TikTok. The world's most famous short video application is currently being sought to be banned by the United States (U.S.) due to concerns over national security regarding its ownership by ByteDance, a Chinese company.
"I have not made an offer for TikTok," Musk confessed during a forum in Germany at the end of January, as quoted from a Reuters report on Monday, February 10, 2025. This statement was made during a conference held by Axel Springer, where Musk joined via video.
The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said that he was open to the possibility of Musk buying TikTok if he wished. On the other hand, Musk affirmed that he has no plans to manage the platform. "I have no idea what I would do with TikTok if I owned it," he said. He also revealed that he did not use the app and was unfamiliar with its format.
Musk added that he was not interested in acquiring TikTok or any other company in general. "I'm not too interested in acquiring TikTok. I rarely buy companies, it's very rare," he said.
He explained that his approach to business was more focused on building companies from scratch rather than purchasing existing ones.
A major acquisition like the one he made for the social media platform Twitter, now called X, is an exception. "I typically build companies from scratch," Musk added.
Previously, Musk's acquisition of Twitter had sparked wide discussions, especially regarding changes in policy and the business direction of the platform under his control.
Meanwhile, ByteDance continues to face pressure from the U.S. government to sell TikTok assets in the country. Lawmakers are very concerned that the app could pose a national security risk because of the potential access to U.S. user data by the Chinese government, despite TikTok's denial of the allegations.
