NATIONAL INFO - Empowering rural women is essential to advancing Indonesia’s sustainable development, a vision articulated by the Ministry of Coordinating Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) in its latest study.
Rural women hold the key to driving inclusive growth and transforming Indonesia’s villages into hubs of sustainable development. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Coordinating Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) has underscored their empowerment as a vital step in realizing equitable and inclusive progress.
Assistant Deputy for Regional Empowerment and Spatial Mobility, Monalisa Herawati Rumayar, highlighted the critical role of women in village communities. She described their involvement not only as beneficial but as a necessary catalyst for sustainable human development. “Their empowerment is the foundation for achieving an inclusive society that leaves no one behind,” Monalisa remarked on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
The ministry’s Study on Strengthening Women’s Empowerment and Village Development sheds light on the current state of women’s participation in village affairs. Conducted in eleven villages across eight regencies, the study reveals that while empowerment programs exist, their implementation often follows a top-down approach, limiting the innovation and adaptability required to address local challenges effectively.
Economic empowerment initiatives for rural women, such as training in business management and entrepreneurship, have been pivotal in improving livelihoods. These programs target diverse groups, including female heads of households, survivors of domestic violence, and former migrant workers. Despite their impact, the study underscores the importance of enhancing women’s active participation in decision-making processes to ensure that development reflects their aspirations.
Collaboration between district governments, village administrations, and civil society organizations has played a crucial role in supporting empowerment programs. These partnerships have facilitated resource sharing, improved program implementation, and expanded access to training. Monalisa emphasized that sustainable empowerment requires not only funding but also integrated cooperation between various sectors to address complex local realities.
The findings of the study aim to serve as a foundation for more inclusive policy-making at the village level. By adopting a participatory approach, village governments can design initiatives that genuinely respond to the needs of rural women. This effort aligns with the goals of the Village Government and Development Strengthening Program (P3PD), which seeks to integrate inclusivity into every aspect of rural development.
Kemenko PMK’s vision is clear, empowering rural women is not merely a development target but a strategic investment in the nation’s future. By unlocking their potential, Indonesia is poised to create a more just and equitable society where no one is left behind. With rural women at the forefront, the dream of sustainable and inclusive development becomes an achievable reality.(*)
