Russia: No Reason Yet to Negotiate End of Ukraine War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia sees no reason yet for negotiations regarding efforts to end the Ukraine war. The statement was made as Russia responded to increasing calls for peace talks since Donald Trump won the US presidential election last November.

"There is no basis for negotiations," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Izvestia newspaper on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, as quoted from Reuters.

Peskov emphasized that many countries have expressed their readiness to mediate the Ukraine war and Moscow appreciates all countries for their good intentions, including Qatar. Qatar has mediated the return of Ukrainian children brought to Russia from conflict zones since the start of the war. Thousands of civilians, mostly Ukrainians, have been killed since Russia launched a massive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Earlier on Monday, December 2, 2024, Valentina Matviyenko, a spokesperson for the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, said there might be efforts to initiate peace negotiations with Ukraine in 2025. Meanwhile, at the end of November 2024, sources told Reuters that Russian President Vladimir Putin was open to discussing a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine with Trump and might agree to end the Ukraine war.

Russian troops control about 20 percent of Ukrainian territory and have recently advanced at the fastest pace since the start of the war. However, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that it will not negotiate with President Volodymyr Zelensky unless Ukraine abandons its ambition to join NATO and withdraws its forces from areas currently controlled by Russian troops.

On the other hand, this week Kyiv stated that it will not accept anything other than NATO membership to guarantee its future security. Kyiv also said it will not sacrifice its territory.

With Trump's promise to end the war shortly after taking office in January and appointing an envoy to Ukraine who supports a freeze in the front lines, concerns are growing in Kyiv and among its allies that the terms of any potential ceasefire deal will favor Russia and leave Ukraine in a vulnerable position.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has sought to bolster Kyiv before stepping down, allowing Ukraine to use its long-range missiles against Russia. On Monday, December 2, 2024, in the latest similar move, the US government approved another military aid package for Kyiv worth $725 million.
