TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, stated that biodiversity as a supporter of ecotourism in national parks is currently in need of special attention, especially the survival of endangered species such as the Javan rhinoceros.
He cited the example of the fate of the Javan rhinoceros species in the Ujung Kulon National Park. "The Javan rhinoceros is one of the rare animals, and its habitat is also threatened. For example, if there is a threat like, nauzubillah (We seek refuge to God), the eruption of Mount Krakatau, it is an extraordinary danger, a threat of extinction," said Raja Juli at the campus of Gadjah Mada University on Friday, October 17, 2025.
Juli also mentioned that currently there is no comprehensive study on the Javan rhinoceros in Ujung Kulon, including concrete conservation efforts that can be undertaken. This is different from the rhinoceros in Lampung or the Sumatran rhinoceros, which according to him, already have studies and conservation assessments.
Javan Rhinoceros Test-Tube Baby
However, he stated that he was instructed by President Prabowo Subianto to preserve Indonesia's biodiversity. "Therefore, we are currently collaborating with IPB (Bogor Agricultural University) to develop ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology), a sort of test-tube baby for the Javan rhinoceros," said Raja Juli.
The reason for the implementation of the test-tube baby program, according to Raja Juli, is because it has already been successfully implemented in the rhinoceros species in Way Kambas, Lampung.
Before the program is implemented, the genetic structure of the Javan rhinoceros will be studied and preserved through a biobank facility first. This biobank is a facility that stores and manages biological samples such as blood, tissues, DNA, and health data. The genetic material is taken from a pair of rhinoceros, male and female.
"The genetic material will be studied in this biobank, including later the sperm and egg of these rhinoceros. After that, with ART technology, they can be mated, like a test-tube baby," he said.
In addition to the test-tube baby effort, Raja Juli also mentioned that efforts are being made to improve the habitat of the Javan rhinoceros so that more can go through the natural regeneration process.
For this habitat improvement, he said that the Ministry of Forestry is currently working on the translocation process of the species in collaboration with the TNI. "Naturally, this translocation process is led, moved to a safe place. The place is still in Ujung Kulon, but in a slightly different area from the current one," he said.
