TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military has destroyed more than 1,500 buildings in Gaza since the ceasefire agreement took effect last month, according to satellite imagery released on Wednesday, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

Satellite images reviewed by BBC Verify revealed that entire residential areas within Israeli-controlled territory outside Gaza’s so-called “buffer zone” have been completely leveled since October 10.

Images taken before the ceasefire in Abasan Al-Kabira, Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, showed many intact homes surrounded by gardens, trees, and orchards. However, subsequent photos of the same area depict widespread devastation, with most structures reduced to rubble.

Additional satellite images from Rafah, Jabalia, and Gaza City also show a sharp increase in destruction following the ceasefire, with once densely built neighborhoods flattened.

The actual number of destroyed buildings could be significantly higher, with satellite imagery for some areas being unavailable for BBC Verify’s assessment,” BBC Verify said in its report.

An Israeli military spokesperson defended the demolitions, claiming they were carried out in response to “threats” and aimed at dismantling Hamas’ remaining infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Gaza Government Media Office reported that Israel has committed 282 ceasefire violations to date, including 12 attacks on residential neighborhoods, 124 artillery shellings, and 52 airstrikes targeting civilian areas.

The office stated that 242 Palestinians have been killed and more than 620 injured as a result of Israeli attacks since the truce began.

The ceasefire agreement, effective since October 10, is based on a 20-point plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The first phase includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, followed by reconstruction efforts and the establishment of a new governance framework in Gaza that excludes Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, injured over 170,000 others, and rendered much of the Gaza Strip uninhabitable, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
