TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Senegalese national team secured their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title after narrowly defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Senegal's only goal was scored by Pape Gueye in the 94th minute of extra time. The Senegalese midfielder capitalized on a swift counterattack that the Moroccan defense was unable to contain, as reported on the official AFCON website.
This title marks Senegal's second in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations. They previously won their first trophy in the 2021 edition, also held in Morocco.
Conversely, this defeat extends Morocco's wait for another Africa Cup of Nations title. The team nicknamed the Atlas Lions last lifted the trophy in the 1976 edition in Ethiopia.
From the start of the match, Senegal played more aggressively. Their first chance came through a header from Pape Gueye, which was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Shortly after, it was Iliman Ndiaye's turn to threaten, but Bounou was again alert, keeping his goal clean.
Morocco only responded in the second half. Ayoub El Kaabi and Abde Ezzalzouli created chances, but neither could find the target.
Drama struck at the end of normal time. Morocco was awarded a penalty in the 90+8 minute after the referee reviewed the VAR and deemed Brahim Diaz to have been fouled in the box. The decision sparked furious protests from the Senegalese side, leading to a brief halt to the match. After play resumed, Diaz's penalty was saved by Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, forcing the match into extra time.
In extra time, Senegal finally broke the deadlock. Pape Gueye's goal in the 94th minute secured a 1-0 lead that held until the final whistle, confirming Senegal as champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
