Hasjim Djalal will be laid out at the funeral home on Jalan Taman Cilandak III Number 2, West Cilandak, tonight until tomorrow afternoon.
Throughout his life, Hasjim Djalal was known as a great diplomat who was an expert in the field of international maritime law. The man born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, on February 25, 1934, served as Indonesia's ambassador to the United Nations or UN from 1981 to 1983.
In his career at the UN, Hasjim was appointed as Chair of the Human Rights Commission of the world peace organization. In addition to being an ambassador to the UN, Hasjim also served as ambassador to several other countries, namely Canada from 1983 to 1985 and German ambassador from 1990 to 1993.
During the reign of President Soeharto, Hasjim served as a traveling ambassador. In a Tempo article entitled Making the Sea the Glue of the Archipelago, Hasjim Djalal tells his story of guarding national interests in maritime law negotiations that lasted almost ten years.
He said that he applied the morals of Minang proverbs as a guide to diplomacy. His hard work over the years has yielded sweet results.
The Djuanda Declaration was finally recognized internationally in 1982 through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Thanks to this, international law officially recognized the concept of an archipelagic state, which increased Indonesia's waters 60 times larger than when Indonesia first became independent.
