TEMPO.CO, Solo - The Solo City Government, in cooperation with the Religious and Educational Attache of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia and the Al Madinah Foundation, will hold a record-breaking longest Ramadan iftar in the Manahan area on Friday, March 14, 2025. The event will be inked in the Indonesian World Record Museum, or MURI.
The event committee chief Rohmat Purwanto said the 2.7-kilometer iftar (fast-breaking evening meal during Ramadan) event is open to the public and free of charge.
"Alhamdulillah, this longest fast-breaking event has received support and facilities from the Solo City Government, especially from Mr. Mayor (Respati Ardi)," said Rohmat after an audience with the Mayor of Solo, Respati Ardi, at the Solo City Hall, Central Java, today, Thursday, March 13, 2025.
The iftar event was originally set to be held on the city walk on Slamet Riyadi Street, Solo, but was then relocated to Manahan in consideration of the traffic density over the weekend.
Rohmat explained that the committee has prepared over 12,000 to 15,000 food portions for the event, spending about Rp1 billion in budget. The committee urged people seeking to join the event to come early, as the space is rather limited. The committee will also designate special areas for those wanting to perform Maghrib prayer after breaking their fast.
"We will divide the participants into separate zones per 100 meters and determine which can enter the designated block. Everyone can come, but we urge them to come early considering the limited space so that they can get a seat," he said.
Rohmat expressed his hopes for the iftar event, which held in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Embassy, to bolster the cooperation between Solo City and Saudi Arabian governments.
The Acting Public Relations Officer for the Ramadan event, Muhammad Jafari, explained that Solo City was chosen by the Embassy of Saudi Arabia due to former President Joko Widodo’s achievements that have brought their attention to the city. “We know that Solo City is a center of civilization, with many prominent figures coming from the city,” he said.
Jafar stated that the mayor of Solo, Respati Ardi, has distributed 5,400 free coupons to residents in need. The menu for the free iftar event contains takjil (typical light snacks consumed during Ramadan), fruits, main course which include a variety of Indonesian dishes, and mineral water.
"Participants who come will be provided with mats and directed to take a seat while the staff distributes the foods. The meals are given in boxes with a custom cardboard inscribed with the phrase gift from the leader of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, King Salman bin Abdulaziz," he said.
Several representatives from Saudi Arabia will attend the record-breaking Ramadan iftar event, as well as several Solo City government officials. "We also plan to invite the 7th President, Jokowi," he said.
