TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded thirteen tectonic aftershocks in Southern Halmahera, North Maluku, until this afternoon, October 21. This tally begins with the initial earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 5.8, revised from the previous estimate of 5.6 magnitudes, and struck at 10:21 a.m. local time.
Daryono, Director of the BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami, attributed this sequence of shallow quakes to the active subduction of fault lines. “Aftershocks from this series of Southern Halmahera quakes have occurred between 10:24 a.m. and 2:20 p.m.,” he stated in a written release on Monday afternoon.
These aftershocks spanned a period of nearly four hours. By 11:30 a.m., the agency had already recorded six aftershocks, with the largest magnitude reaching 5.1. The remaining aftershocks occurred over the subsequent two hours.
According to the latest BMKG data, the quake's epicenter was located at coordinates 1.10 degrees south latitude and 127.38 degrees east longitude, or approximately 4 kilometers northwest of North Obi in the sea. The tremor originated from a depth of 10 kilometers.
Daryono noted that this tremor was felt in Labuha City with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, meaning it was perceptible to many people indoors. The vibrations were described as similar to a passing truck.
“Thus far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the quake,” Daryono affirmed. He also confirmed that there was no risk of a tsunami.
On behalf of BMKG, Daryono urged the public to remain calm and avoid being swayed by unverified information. Moreover, he advised people to inspect their buildings for any earthquake-related damage before entering them.
