TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The main opposition party of South Korea, the Democratic Party, which controls the parliament, said it will initiate impeachment proceedings if the country's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, does not resign, as reported by YTN citing ANTARA on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

The plan for impeachment of the president came after Yoon announced martial law but later cancelled the action three hours later, triggering the largest political crisis that South Korea has faced in decades.

The largest opposition party reportedly stated that the move would reflect the wishes of the people of South Korea.

A coalition of parliament members from the opposition party said they plan to propose a bill to impeach Yoon on Wednesday, which must be voted on within 72 hours according to Sky News.

"The parliament must focus on immediately suspending the president's affairs in order to pass the impeachment bill as soon as possible," said Hwang Un-ha, a coalition parliament member, to reporters.

YTN also reported that the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions has announced an indefinite general strike until President Yoon Suk Yeol resigns.

The President of South Korea announced a military emergency on Tuesday night claiming that the opposition sympathizes with North Korea and is planning a rebellion.

Following his surprising announcement, South Korean forces entered the National Assembly building as police and protesters clashed outside. Parliament members used fire extinguishers to prevent the forces from entering the parliament.

The parliament opposed the president's declaration and chose to revoke the military emergency. The parliament's spokesperson, Woo Won shik, stated that the president's military emergency declaration was invalid following a vote by the legislators.

Subsequently, Yoon Suk Yeol issued a statement stating that he had withdrawn the military personnel involved in implementing the military emergency and would soon revoke it.

A government meeting was held to formalize the decision to lift the military law.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on Wednesday that he had postponed his scheduled visit to South Korea this week. Ulf Kristersson was scheduled to hold a summit meeting with President Yoon.

The largest workers' union coalition in South Korea, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, said thousands of its members will strike until Yoon resigns. They will also hold demonstrations in Seoul.

Several other protests are expected to take place, including near the National Assembly, where thousands gathered on Tuesday night to demand the rejection of Yoon's order - and then demand his arrest and resignation.
