TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that floods and landslides occurred in Barru Regency, South Sulawesi Province, on Friday, December 20, 2024. Head of the BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said most of the floods have receded, but emergency handling is still ongoing until Monday.
Floods hit a number of villages in seven districts, namely the Tanete Rilau district, comprising 8 villages: Mallusetasi (6 villages), Barru (6 villages), Tanete Riaja (6 villages), Balusu (4 villages), Soppeng Riaja (2 villages), and Pujananting (1 village).
Based on BNPB data on Monday, the total population affected by the floods was 17,209 households, or 55,662 people. “Additionally, the BNPB Operations Control Center reported one casualty due to the flooding,” he said.
Landslides also hit several inundated locations in Barru Regency. “Landslides swept several villages in six districts, including Mallusetasi, Soppeng Riaja, Balusu, Tanete Rilau, Tanete Riaja, and Pujananting,” he said.
The landslides, Muhari said, cut off road access and affected 1,122 households, or 3,911 residents.
The Barru Regency Management Agency (BPBD) has conducted an emergency response to the torrential rainfall-induced disaster. Muhari said evacuation sites have been set up for those wanting to evacuate, but due to the difficulty accessing roads, residents have opted to evacuate independently.
“The BPBD also erected a public kitchen and distributed aid to residents affected by floods and landslides that swept in early in the morning around 1:00 a.m. local time,” he said.
For the next week, thunderstorms and drizzles are still expected in Barru Regency. Given the extreme weather potential, Muhari urged residents to remain vigilant about the possibility of subsequent disasters.
Muhari also ensured that the local government has been working with BNPB to assure safety and comfort to those affected by the floods and landslides, as well as intensifying coordination to speed up disaster management. He directed residents to contact 117 in case of emergency.
