Spain-Portugal Reeling from Massive Blackout: Impact Unfolds

5 hours ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The blackout that occurred in Spain, Portugal, and parts of France on April 28, 2025, had deadly consequences. It disrupted several public services. International events were also postponed due to the power supply disruption.

The blackout brought train service to a complete halt in several regions of Spain. Not a single train was in operation. The national Spanish train company, Renfe, reported that the power supply disruption occurred at 12:30 local time.

The blackout also disrupted the tennis matches at the Madrid Open on April 28, 2025. The power went out during two singles matches and one doubles match in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

The blackout caused the electronic communication system and the spider cameras suspended above the field at the Manolo Santana Stadium to malfunction. At that time, Grigor Dimitrov was leading Jacob Fearnley with a score of 6-4, 5-4 when the match was stopped. Dimitrov, the 16th-ranked tennis player in the world, had been at match point after leading 5-2, 40-30 in the second set.

In Portugal, the blackout in the north-south regions made streetcars unable to operate, resulting in severe traffic jams. The metro networks in Lisbon and Porto were paralyzed. The train network was also not operational.

A tourist from Aveiro, Fernanda Picarra, initially thought the tram she was on was broken. Citing from Antara, she waited inside the tram for quite a while before realizing that several other trams had also stopped. Finally, the conductor asked everyone to get off.

Banks, restaurants, and cafes throughout Lisbon went pitch black. The blackout forced business owners to close their shops and caused many people to spill onto the streets. Bank staff explained to customers that services would be suspended until the power supply was restored.

The blackout briefly affected some areas in France. However, the French electricity transmission system operator, RTE, announced on Monday, April 28, local time, that all affected households had regained access to electricity.

On its official X account, the company stated that French households were briefly without electricity for several minutes before it was restored.

The blackout forced the Spanish Ministry of the Interior to declare it a national emergency. The power supply was restored to normal on Tuesday morning, April 29, 2025.
