TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The majority of German citizens oppose the provision of military support to Israel, despite the recent government decision to continue arms supplies, according to a new survey released on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
The survey revealed that 60 percent of respondents opposed arms supplies to Israel, as Prime Minister Netanyahu intensified his attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, raising concerns of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
Only 31 percent of those surveyed said that Germany should send weapons to ensure Israel's security, while 9 percent were unsure.
The poll was conducted following media reports indicating that Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government had decided to resume arms supplies to Israel. This decision came after assurances from Tel Aviv that they would abide by international law when using German military equipment.
Germany reportedly halted arms supplies to Israel in March, after Nicaragua filed a case against Berlin at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Germany of aiding in "genocide" in Gaza.
Germany has long been a key ally of Israel, with Chancellor Scholz often emphasizing Germany's special responsibility for Israel's security due to the Nazi past.
However, critics argue that Germany's unwavering support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government damages its international credibility and further isolates Berlin on the global stage.
Since Israel launched its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza last October, more than 42,600 Palestinians have been killed and over 100,000 others injured, with the majority being women and children.
Israel is currently facing a case of genocide in the ICJ for its actions in Gaza, where millions of Palestinians remain displaced and face food shortages, medical supplies, and other basic necessities.
Scholz Promises to Resume Arms Deliveries to Israel
As reported by Reuters, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, recently affirmed that Germany would supply more weapons to Israel soon, after a significant decline in shipments this year prompted opposition accusations that Berlin was deliberately delaying exports.
"We have not decided not to supply weapons. We have supplied weapons and we will supply weapons," Scholz told parliament at an event commemorating the victims of Hamas attacks on October 7, countering accusations from opposition leader Friedrich Merz.
The government has made decisions "that also ensure that there will be further deliveries soon," the chancellor said.
Merz, a conservative opposition leader in Germany, accused the government of delaying arms exports to Israel, including ammunition and tank spare parts.
"For weeks and months, the federal government has refused to grant export approvals for ammunition and even spare parts for tanks," Merz said in parliament.
"We are aware of several specific cases where the government has withheld approval for equipment and materials that Israel urgently needs to defend itself," Merz added.
