Taste Paris Like a Local: 5 Tips for Affordable, Authentic Food Finds

3 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Paris is a dream destination for many people. In addition to being rich in history and culture, the Parisian culinary scene is worth exploring. However, popular tourist spots, including those on social media, have made it difficult for travelers to find affordable and authentic culinary experiences.

Travelers often get trapped in overpriced and ordinary restaurants at tourist spots like the Champs-Élysées and Notre Dame. As reported by the Daily Mail, here are the best tips to avoid tourist traps while enjoying Parisian culinary delights.

1. Avoid places crowded with vloggers and TikTokers

If you see more Parisians at a restaurant, it's better than a viral one. For example, Cafe de Flore and La Maison Rose both went viral because of their cute exterior and expensive hot chocolate with cream. The price for a cup of that drink is 11.50 euros. Not to mention the long queue extending outside the door.

Instead, try Maison Fleuret Paris, a calm and comfortable place, in a former bookstore on another block. Or, for traditional French bistro food, try Bouillon Pigalle in the 18th district. The restaurant offers French onion soup, escargot, and crème brûlée at a very affordable price of around 10 to 15 euros.

2. Walk at least 10 minutes from the dining place

After a day of visiting the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Champs-Élysées, people usually choose the first restaurant they see. However, cafes and restaurants near tourist spots are always expensive and disappointing.

So, walk just 10-15 minutes from the usual route to find extraordinary, authentic restaurants. For example, visit amazing bistros often frequented by Parisians in Rue Cler from the Eiffel Tower.

3. Look for a large menu in English and reviews from English speakers

A sign that indicates a tourist trap is a place with a large menu translated into English, and Google reviews are all in English and from Americans.

Make sure to dine at a place that provides 3-4 servings, as most likely the food is homemade and made from quality ingredients. Seasonal cuisine is also important for Parisian culture. If a restaurant has an unlimited menu all year round, it serves the general public and not the delicate tastes of the French.

4. Visit the 17th-century covered markets in Paris

If you want to mingle with classy Parisians, try dining at a covered market as an alternative, but still affordable. For example, Le Marché Couvert des Enfants Rouge is the oldest food market in Paris, opened in 1615, making it a place that offers the most authentic Parisian flavors you can get.

The variety of food offered means there's a price point for everyone and food for everyone, with stalls selling Moroccan, Lebanese, Italian, and Japanese food alongside traditional French produce.

5. Try recommendations from locals

Parisians recommend Café du Commerce as an authentic and affordable restaurant. The art deco interior of Commerce has been preserved since the restaurant first opened in the 1920s. Travelers can enjoy typical French dishes such as onion soup, snails, and fries for around 20-30 euros.

If you want to dine outdoors, head to Eli in the 11th district to enjoy delicious Greek street food at a reasonable price. Both lunch and dinner cost around 10 euros. But if you want to enjoy sweet treats, head to Canal Saint Martin and visit the cafe and bakery Du Pain et des Ides to enjoy delicious pastries priced at 5 euros.
