TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several Syrian embassies abroad hoist flags with the three-star symbol of rebel forces. In Spain, around 150 people cheered and shouted "Freedom!" when a man at the Syrian embassy in Madrid threw the government flag of President Bashar Al Assad to the ground. He raised a black, green, and white flag with three stars used by the rebels.
"This is an unforgettable day for all Syrians. December 8, 2024. We will create a free country for all Syrians," said Bilal Kutaini, 32, a dentist, outside the Syrian embassy in Madrid, Spain as quoted by Reuters.
This action has spread to various countries, from Greece to Indonesia. The Syrian Embassy in Indonesia replaced the flag on its Facebook page with the three-star flag. "Today you write a new page in Syria's history, to establish agreements and a national pact that unites the words of Syrian citizens, unites them and does not divide them, to build a homeland dominated by justice and equality where everyone enjoys all rights and duties, far from one opinion. Citizenship is its foundation," wrote the Syrian Embassy on Facebook.
The three-star flag was also hoisted at the Syrian Embassy in Moscow. Despite Russia giving protection to Bashar Al-Assad and his family.
Below are the differences between the Assad regime's flag and the Syrian rebel forces as reported by NDTV:
Assad Regime Syrian Flag
The green-white-black-red opposition flag was seen throughout Syria shortly after rebel forces declared the fall of President Bashar al-Assad. As Syrians realized the country's change, the rebel flag replaced Assad's posters, which used to be visible in almost every corner. As a result, the previously hoisted Syrian flag has changed.
Since 1980, Syria has used a tri-color flag of red, white, and black. In the middle is a green star.
Red symbolizes the spilled blood in the revolution for the freedom of Syrians. White indicates a peaceful future, with the green star in the middle symbolizing Syria and Egypt, the two founding countries of the United Arab Republic. Black signifies the alleged oppression experienced by Arab people.
The flag was first adopted in 1958 when the country gained independence from European influence and decided to form the United Arab Republic with Egypt. Syria changed its flag three more times between 1961 and 1980 before settling on the current design. However, with the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the flag is likely to change.
Syrian Opposition Forces Version of Flag
On Sunday, as rebels announced on Syrian government television that the ruling family dynasty for 50 years has been ousted, the opposition flag in green-white-black-red was seen nationwide. Celebrations echoed in Germany, Turkey, and Greece, where thousands cheered hoisting the Syrian opposition flag.
The opposition's flag is not significantly different from the current Syrian flag. It is green at the top, white in the middle, black at the bottom with three red stars in the middle.
This flag is a modified version of the first independence flag used in 1932 when Syria gained independence from France. Syrian opposition prefers this flag to represent independence from the Assad regime.
