One of the ATR 42-500 aircraft debris found at Mount Bulusaraung Peak, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Documentation by the joint SAR team.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta One of the wreckage pieces of an ATR 42-500 aircraft was seen scattered on the slopes of Mount Bulusaraung Peak, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Pieces of the fuselage, with its pale green aluminum frame, were creased and torn, partially embedded in the muddy ground and wet mountain grass.

In photos received by Tempo, parts of the fuselage structure appear to be exposed, exposing the inner frame and peeling metal layers. Several aircraft panels and components appear to be separated, some charred and deformed.

Another photo shows white debris scattered near the large debris. A brown T-shirt with the Garuda bird logo was also found. One video shows several Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and Basarnas personnel at the wreckage site.

Photos taken from the scene recorded coordinates at an altitude of approximately 1,389 meters above sea level. Thick fog blanketed the peak area, limiting visibility and indicating the humid weather conditions at the time the wreckage was discovered.

Andi Sultan, Head of Operations and Alertness for Basarnas Makassar, stated that large pieces of the aircraft had been reported by the air crew. The search and rescue (SAR) team has been monitoring the area since 6:47 a.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time) with aircraft AI-7301 (Boeing 737-200) taking off from Hasanuddin Air Force Base.

"We can see the fuselage and tail," he said in an official video statement received by Tempo on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

Helicopter H-2213 (H225M Caracal) followed at 7:07 a.m. WITA. AI-7301 first reported indications of white aircraft debris above Bulusaraung Hill at 7:26 a.m. WITA. H-2213 moved to the location and reported the debris north of Bulusaraung Peak at around 7:35 a.m. WITA.

The discovery location is on the southern slope of the peak, with the fuselage positioned north of Mount Bulusaraung Peak. The ground SAR team is still preparing access to the location due to the steep terrain and foggy conditions that complicate evacuation.
