TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cyber Unit Commander of Indonesia military or TNI, Brig. Gen. Ari Yulianto, inspected the devices of TNI personnel at the weekly ceremony at the B3 Ceremony Field, TNI Headquarters, Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Monday, December 2, 2024. The inspection of TNI personnel's devices is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directive to crack down on rampant online gambling practices.
In addition to conducting routine inspections of soldiers' devices, the TNI has established a task force to eradicate online gambling. In a written statement, Ari said that this inspection is a manifestation of the TNI's seriousness in maintaining the integrity of its personnel and supporting the execution of its mission.
"The TNI continues to strive to maintain internal discipline and contribute to the eradication of various forms of cybercrime in Indonesia," he said, as quoted from the written statement on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center, or PPATK, reported that 4,000 TNI personnel were involved in online gambling throughout 2024. Thousands of military personnel involved in online gambling have been subjected to sanctions, including disciplinary actions, minor penalties, major penalties, and criminal penalties.
Previously, the commander of the TNI Military Police Center Maj. Gen. Yusri Nuryanto revealed the reasons why 4,000 TNI soldiers were involved in online gambling. According to him, easy access and inappropriate use of leisure time are factors that lead TNI soldiers to engage in online gambling.
"Well, that's because the TNI [soldiers] in their age group, they have their phones with them every day, so it's easy for them to use their gadgets during their leisure time," Yusri said when met at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise in Jakarta on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Yusri denied that TNI soldiers were involved in online gambling due to inadequate welfare. He assessed that the welfare of the soldiers was currently at a sufficient level.
