TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe world has been constantly exposed to economic challenges in recent years, from high-priced housing rentals and extortionate education fees to costly groceries. While the majority of European countries generate higher GDP compared to other regions, these most expensive countries in Europe still hinder the lives of many of its residents as well as people aiming to travel there.

Top 10 Most Expensive Countries in Europe

This article reveals the 10 most expensive countries in Europe based on the findings of Visual Capitalist and MSN

1. Luxembourg

Luxembourg is dubbed the most expensive country in Europe, with the highest prices measured by the currency required to obtain the same goods in other nations. Compared to the average European country, Luxembourg logs 52% higher prices. Even so, Luxembourg boasts the highest median income of its counterparts across the region.

The mainstream occupation in the country is finance, where the country gained its lavish reputation. Without accumulating the rent, the average cost of living for a single person in Luxembourg touches the base of $1,055.

2. Iceland

Iceland is listed as one of the most expensive countries to travel in Europe. Citing AirDNA, Iceland scores 99 for its highest-performing market, demonstrating the extensive demand and valuable revenue for rental houses.

For a single person to live in the island country, there needs to be at least a budget of $1,274 without rent payment. This is due to the challenges posed by importing goods to the country.

3. Ireland

Following suit is Ireland, which reportedly offers 45% higher goods prices compared to the average European country because the low-population nation experiences expensive importing levies.

The average one-bedroom living space is rented at the price of $1,570 in Ireland, signifying its hefty cost of living.

4. Denmark

Despite being continuously promoted as one of the happiest countries, Denmark has a fairly high cost of living that requires a single person to have $1,136 without taking rent into account. However, the country is among those that score a well-developed quality of life, including for its high wage.

5. Finland

Located way up in the north of the European region, Finland records 28% higher goods prices compared to its neighboring countries. The hefty cost of living is perhaps manifested through the country’s free healthcare system, free education, and other notable services.

The average cost of living for a single person in Finland sums up to $1,768 with an $836 deduction for a single-room apartment fee.

6. Netherlands

In terms of living budget, the Netherlands poses a fairly expensive rate within the European region. One single-bedroom apartment in the country costs a staggering price of $1,279. Additionally, the Netherlands has 22% higher goods prices than the average European countries. The surge is stemmed both by its tourism and high quality of life.

7. Norway

Norway is as expensive as it is beautiful with its elegant natural wonders. For a single person, the cost of living reaches a total of $2,254. The high quality of life in the country makes up for the expensive home prices and transportation.

8. Austria

Austria boasts 18% higher goods prices than other European countries. Its high wages and overall well-developed safety net contribute to the cost of living. For a family of four, the budget leaps to at least $3,570 with an additional rent fee of $1,524.

9. Germany

The price tags of goods in Germany are reportedly 10% higher than other European countries. While facing inflation issues, the nation takes up to $1,882 for the cost of living for a single person. A family of four needs to pay around $1,616 for a three-bedroom apartment.

10. France

Popular within the tourism scene, France boasts an expensive cost of living, accumulated to $1,737 for a single person. The leap is due to the country’s prices of goods that are at least 7% higher compared to the average European countries.

Despite the budget hindrances, these 10 most expensive countries in Europe continue to charm travelers globally.
