Trump Endorses Cuomo, Threatens to Cut Funds for New York If Zohran Mamdani Wins Mayoral Race

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President from the Republican Party Donald Trump said on Monday that he would limit federal funds for New York City if the Democratic candidate, Zohran Mamdani, wins the mayoral election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

As reported by CNA, Trump also urged his supporters to vote for former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been involved in several scandals, including sexual harassment.

If Mamdani wins the election, Trump stated on Truth Social that it is "highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required."

Polls show Mamdani leading over Cuomo, who is running as an independent candidate after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Mamdani also leads over the Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa.

Trump mentioned that voting for Sliwa would only benefit Mamdani and urged his supporters to back Cuomo.

"Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job," wrote Trump.

The Republican Party has attacked Mamdani's nomination throughout the campaign, with Trump describing the self-proclaimed democratic socialist as a communist.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old born in Uganda and a member of the New York State Assembly, surprised political observers on June 24 with a convincing victory in the primary election.

Mamdani's policies include tax hike for the wealthiest in New York City, corporate tax rate hikes, freezing stabilised apartment rental rates and increasing publicly subsidised housing.

His rise presents both a risk and an advantage for the Democratic Party, which acknowledges the need to attract young voters. However, they are concerned about the Republican Party's attacks on Mamdani's criticism of Israel's occupation in Palestine and his Democratic socialism.

Throughout his second term, Trump has exploited the threat of cutting federal funds for climate initiatives, transgender policies, pro-Palestine protests against Israel's genocide in Gaza, as well as diversity, equality, and inclusion practices.
