TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he will assist Myanmar, which has recently been hit by a severe earthquake causing numerous casualties and severe damage.
"We will help (Myanmar)," said Trump on Friday when asked by journalists about the earthquake, which is predicted to have killed more than 10,000 people. "Yes, it's terrible what happened."
As reported by Antara, , he also ensured that the White House had been in contact with the authorities in Myanmar.
Trump's swift response to the request for assistance from the junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, was delivered as Myanmar faces Western sanctions and increases its dependence on China and Russia.
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Myanmar on Friday has claimed at least 1,000 lives and injured 2,300 others.
The extent of the damage caused by the earthquake is still unclear as the Myanmar junta limits internet access and social media for the public.
The Myanmar junta, which took over civilian government in 2021, stated that the number of casualties is expected to rise, and Myanmar welcomes international assistance.
The earthquake in Myanmar is the first major natural disaster since Donald Trump cut off the United States' aid for international assistance, as reported by The Express. Trump pledged assistance in response to the severe earthquake in Myanmar on the same day that the last staff members were released from their duties at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The US State Department said it is forming a team in Myanmar. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told journalists that the government will use the request for assistance and reports from the region to shape its response.
However, a former USAID official said the system is now "in disarray", with no ability to conduct search and rescue operations or to deliver aid.
Sarah Charles, a former senior USAID official who oversaw disaster response teams and overall humanitarian work under the Biden administration, said the system lacks personnel or resources to move quickly to extract survivors from collapsed buildings and save lives.
