TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. Department of State is currently investigating an Israeli military unit regarding widespread reports of human rights violations-such as rape and torture, against Palestinian detainees in an Israeli detention center. This was reported by the U.S. media Axios on Monday.
Several members of the Israeli military unit known as the 'Unit 100' are currently on trial for allegedly sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp, Axios reported, citing two U.S. officials and two Israeli officials.
The Sde Teiman facility, referred to by human rights organizations as 'Israel's Guantanamo,' has long been scrutinized for alleged violations.
Last August, Israel's Channel 12 aired footage showing Israeli soldiers moving a detainee out of surveillance range to sexually abuse them in the Sde Teiman Prison, located in the Negev desert.
When asked by Anadolu about the incident, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated in an address in August that there must be 'zero tolerance' for sexual abuse or rape of detainees and urged Israel to investigate the allegations.
On Monday, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel declined to comment in detail on the Axios report, citing internal department review processes.
"In security relationships with any country, we naturally have a process to assess and review when certain facts emerge or are presented to the United States in all these places. But what I can say is I have no news to share or announcements regarding any policy towards Israel," he said.
This report comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken prepares to visit Israel, where Washington is pushing for the resumption of ceasefire talks related to the Gaza war following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
