U.S. Vice President Says Ukraine Unlikely to Win Against Russia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President of the United States JD Vance said that Ukraine is unlikely to win in its conflict with Russia, just as it was three years ago when the war began.

Vance even argued that if the U.S. had been led by Donald Trump at the time, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia would never have happened.

"For three years, President Trump and I have made two simple arguments: first, the war wouldn't have started if President Trump was in office; second, that neither Europe, nor the Biden administration, nor the Ukrainians had any pathway to victory," he said on social media X, Thursday, February 20, 2025, as reported by RIA NOVOSTI and quoted by Antara.

Vance stated that while Washington "retains substantial leverage over both parties to the conflict," the Trump administration believed the ongoing conflict would have negative consequences for all, including Europe and the U.S.

Previously, President Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying that he handled the situation with Russia poorly.

"I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his country is shattered, and millions have unnecessarily died," he said, adding that the war cannot end without talking to both sides.

"So we hope to see a ceasefire soon, and to reestablish stability in Europe and the Middle East," said Trump at a foreign investment summit in Miami.
