TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe United Arab Emirates officially launched the first phase of the Blue Visa program at the World Governments Summit on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. This program offers a 10-year residency permit for environmental activists or individuals who have made exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability.

According to The National, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) said 20 sustainability thought leaders and innovators will receive permits in the first phase.

Visas will be granted to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in the field of environmental protection, both marine and land. Works toward improvement on air quality and sustainable technology will also be appreciated.

First Announced in May 2024

The blue visa was first announced in May 2024. According to the state news agency Wam, the blue visa is granted to people inside and outside the UAE.

"This initiative aims to leverage their contributions to achieve ambitious national goals and build a sustainable future for the people of the UAE and the world," said Amna Bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

President of COP28 and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Al Jaber, in May 2024, stated that this visa underscores the country's dedication to leveraging advanced technology and artificial intelligence to create impactful solutions.

"With a forward-thinking approach, these solutions will address climate challenges and transform them into opportunities for a brighter future for humanity and our planet," he added.

Eligibility for the UAE Blue Visa

This visa is granted to supporters of environmental action, including members of international organizations, global companies, various associations and non-governmental organization members.

Individuals can apply directly through the ICP website, or be nominated by the UAE authorities for their contributions. The first phase allows candidates to obtain electronic approval through an application submitted by the government using approved procedures on the ICP website.
