TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two professors at the University of Indonesia (UI), Sulistyawati Irianto and Manneke Budiman, criticized the UI Rector's decision to merely ask Bahlil Lahadalia to revise his dissertation. Based on the ethical trial conducted by the UI Council of Professors, they argued that the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources’ (ESDM) dissertation should have been restarted from scratch.
Sulis, a professor at UI’s Faculty of Law, pointed out that Bahlil’s dissertation had already undergone multiple examinations. Therefore, she insisted that a revision was no longer an option.
"It shouldn't be revised. In which university in the world does someone defend their dissertation and then get asked to revise it?" she told Tempo on Friday, March 7, 2025.
She further asserted that Bahlil’s dissertation was fundamentally flawed from the start, particularly due to dishonesty in data collection.
"It relied on dishonestly obtained data. Even the data owner, Jatam, has sent a letter of protest to UI," she added.
Therefore, she regretted the rector's decision, which she believes disregarded the recommendations of the UI Council of Professors. According to her, the polemic of Bahlil's dissertation is very detrimental to UI. "Even though only a handful of people were involved. But now everyone's reputation is tarnished," she said.
Meanwhile, Manneke Budiman, a professor from the Faculty of Humanities UI, argued that Bahlil had to rewrite his dissertation if he wished to be declared as having passed. He interpreted the rector's decision as a cancellation of the dissertation, albeit phrased more diplomatically.
"The editorial decision is very tarnished and polished to reduce the impression that BL is being sanctioned, but essentially the sanction remains a sanction," he said when contacted separately.
He added that if the Minister of ESDM refuses to rewrite his dissertation, Bahlil should not be declared as having passed. He also opined that if this polemic affects other students besides Bahlil, the punishment might be more severe. This is because the punishment also takes into account Bahlil's position as a state official.
"That's the logical consequence. This is already a big leniency for BL (Bahlil Lahadalia), because if a similar case happened to other students, the punishment might be more severe. They could be declared as failing immediately," he said.
