TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations on Thursday, November 21, 2024, reported a threefold surge in the number of Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated in a press conference that "children are bearing the brunt of the worsening situation in the West Bank."
He explained that "since October 7th of last year, four Palestinian children have been killed every week on average in the West Bank—marking a three-fold increase compared to the first nine months of 2023."
Dujarric also highlighted the violence carried out by illegal Israeli settlers in the area, which continues to cause displacement of Palestinian children.
"Of the more than 1,700 Palestinians displaced by settler violence, intimidation, and harassment in Bedouin and herding communities, nearly half were children," he added.
Over the past few years, the Israeli military has routinely conducted raids in the occupied West Bank, escalating further since the large-scale attacks in Gaza began on October 7, 2023.
Additionally, Palestinian residents have also been targeted with brutal attacks by illegal Israeli settlers.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, nearly 795 Palestinians have been killed and over 6,450 others injured due to Israeli army fire in the occupied West Bank since then.
In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land as "illegal" and calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
