TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 982 Palestinian residents in the occupied West Bank have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since the start of the genocide in Gaza, according to the United Nations Human Rights Office, as reported by Quds Network on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

In a post on X, the UN body referred to Israeli attacks last week in the village of al-Mughayyir as "another example of the ongoing oppression of and coercion against Palestinians." Last week, the Israeli military destroyed around 3,000 olive trees in a village near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, according to the head of the local council.

The West Bank has experienced a surge in Israeli military violence and settlers since Israel launched the genocide in Gaza in October 2023, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinians to leave their homes.

More than 2,370 attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian residents have been reported throughout the region from January 2024 to the end of July this year, according to the latest data from the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA).

Ramallah recorded the highest number of attacks, 585 times, followed by 479 in Nablus in the northern West Bank.

At least 671 Palestinians, including 129 children, have also been killed by Israeli forces and settlers across the West Bank during the same period, said OCHA.

Yesterday, Israeli forces launched prolonged attacks in Ramallah and al-Bireh, and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that at least 58 Palestinian residents were injured.

Israel's Attack on Nablus

On Wednesday, the Israeli military launched an assault involving dozens of soldiers and armored vehicles in the old city of Nablus, in the northern West Bank, according to eyewitnesses and Palestinian officials.

The Israeli military admitted to the operation, without specifying its purpose.

The assault began around 03:00 a.m. local time, said residents, with Israeli troops raiding several settlements in the old city, which is home to around 30,000 people.

"The assault on Nablus is merely a show of force with no justification," said Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas as reported by Al Monitor.

An eyewitness, on conditions of anonymity, reported that Israeli troops had evicted an elderly couple from their home.

"(Soldiers) are storming and searching houses and shops inside the old city, while some houses have been turned into military posts," said Ghassan Hamdan, head of the Palestinian Medical Relief organization in Nablus.

Daghlas said the army had informed Palestinian authorities that the raids would continue until 04:00 p.m.

Footage showed Israeli military forces and vehicles deployed on the city streets.

Local sources said clashes occurred at the eastern entrance of the old city, where young people threw stones at Israeli troops, who responded with tear gas and live ammunition.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported several wounded casualties from the attack, but no injuries from gunfire.

The old city of Nablus has been the target of several major Israeli attacks, including in 2022 and 2023 during large-scale operations that targeted local armed groups, as well as in 2002 during the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising.

In early June 2025, the Israeli forces conducted an operation there that killed at least two Palestinian residents.

Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, violence has surged in the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
