TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian students team from Airlangga University (Unair) has achieved a proud accomplishment in an international competition. In the International Invention and Innovation Competition (I3C) 2025, the Unair team successfully won a gold medal on Sunday, March 10, 2025.
The team consists of Ibrahim Al Khawwas, Nasywa Dhiyaul Haq, Diva Firnanda Azzahra (Faculty of Vocational Studies); Imamul Aziz (Faculty of Pharmacy); and Farhan Aldan Khairian (Faculty of Science and Technology). They successfully competed with 1,500 teams from various countries online in a competition with the theme of "Empowering Minds, Transforming Futures" organized by the Malaysia Innovation Invention Creativity Association (MIICA).
In this competition, they came up with the Smart Timer Reaction (STIREACT) to measure standardized global work fatigue. The STIREACT innovation is based on the issue of work fatigue, which can occur in various sectors and cause a decrease in productivity and potential work accidents.
Currently, there are work fatigue measurement tools that are not integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT). "These two factors underpin our decision to elevate the innovation of work fatigue measurement devices integrated with IoT," Ibrahim said in a written statement on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Ibrahim stated that they collected their data using IoT-based STIREACT devices, supported by interviews and surveys. Subsequently, the data was analyzed using internationally standardized work fatigue measurement tools. The results showed that the STIREACT device has a high level of accuracy in measuring work fatigue.
International Competition Strategy
Ibrahim explained that in participating in international competitions, ensuring the uniqueness and innovation using international literature and patents is essential. "This is to ensure that STIREACT has never been created before and has advantages over existing technology," he said.
Furthermore, team strengthening and collaboration are also important in maximizing task assignments involving supervisors. In addition, time management and intensive training to create a good competition timeline are crucial to ensure that all aspects of the competition are well-prepared.
Facing Challenges
Winning an international championship is not easy. One of the challenges they faced was adjusting the design and IoT technology to function accurately and optimally. The results also had to be validated with internationally standardized work fatigue measurement tools.
Ibrahim said another challenge they faced was balancing time between competition preparation, academics, and organization because their team consisted of a combination of three faculties. "Funding is also important, so there needs to be financial support for the development of devices and research," he said.
He stated that becoming an international champion is an extraordinary experience. Consistency, innovation, and hard work are the keys to victory. "We hope that this research innovation can benefit others, in line with our principle of staying humble regardless of our position," he said.
