TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI), Heri Hermansyah, has revealed the motivations behind the establishment of the Undergraduate Program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the Faculty of Computer Science. According to Heri, UI must adapt to contemporary technological shifts and move beyond a sole reliance on conventional study programs.
"In today’s era, we can see that AI is not only deeply integrated but also increasingly applied across various aspects of life," Heri stated following the 76th Anniversary Open Senate Session of UI at the Depok Campus Assembly Hall on Monday, February 2, 2026.
He noted that the utilization of AI has become widespread, particularly among students who use it to assist with writing and information retrieval.
"Various tasks can now be done with the assistance of AI. We cannot evade this development; therefore, we must be involved in its future evolution," Heri remarked.
To anticipate changes within the business and industrial sectors driven by AI, UI believes it is essential to prepare human resources equipped with specific competencies in this field.
"That is why we are encouraging the Faculty of Computer Science to establish a study program specifically focused on AI," he added.
The AI study program at UI was founded in 2025 and officially began admitting its first cohort of students for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Heri expressed his hope that the AI program will contribute significantly to the advancement of AI technology in Indonesia, particularly regarding its application within the industrial sector. The launch of the AI program at UI's Faculty of Computer Science followed formal approval from the Academic Senate on October 3, 2025.
