Update on Weather Modification: Jakarta Safe from Heavy Rainfall at Noon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) continues its Weather Modification Operation (OMC). On Sunday, February 16, 2025, the operation was carried out in conjunction with the salt sowing in the southwest-northwest area of Jakarta to accelerate the rainfall process before the clouds reached above Jakarta.

"This (weather modification operation) area is to reduce the potential of extreme weather predicted to occur in the afternoon," said the Acting Chairperson of the Logistics and Equipment Sub-Group of the Jakarta BPBD, Michael Sitanggang, in a written statement on Sunday.

The Acting Director of Weather Modification Governance of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Budi Harsoyo, explained that the Jakarta, Banten, and West Java regions have a high potential for the growth of rain clouds, with air humidity prediction in each layer reached 100 percent. But with this OMC, the extreme weather that was predicted to hit Jakarta this afternoon has been reduced.

This operation cooperates with the BMKG, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU), and PT Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia (RAI). The goal is to reduce weather extremities that may trigger floods in Jakarta. It is also considered a mitigation strategy in facing the threat of extreme weather due to climate change and reducing the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.

Budi explained that they have a threshold for the intensity of rainfall that can cause floods in the Jakarta area, which is 50 mm/day. Therefore, if the prediction detects that there will be rainfall events with intensity of more than 50 mm/day, "We will anticipate with seeding operations," said Budi.

Budi also reaffirmed that weather modification operations will not cause drought in Jakarta. If the predicted rainfall intensity is normal, the cloud cells over the Jakarta area will become rain. Thus, the public need not worry about Jakarta experiencing drought during the OMC implementation period. "Many people still misinterpret the current situation."
