TEMPO.CO, Jakarta United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed that no country should impose a toll for crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott told Kyodo news agency on Tuesday, May 12, as quoted by ANTARA, that the agreement was reached during a telephone conversation between Rubio and Wang on April 30.

"Rubio and Wang agreed that no country or organization can be allowed to charge tolls to pass through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz," Pigott said.

According to him, both sides also agreed that Washington and Beijing need to build a constructive, stable, strategic relationship based on mutual respect and reciprocity.

The deal comes at a time when Iran is reportedly still restricting key shipping routes for Middle Eastern oil and gas, making the U.S. and Israel's conflict with Iran expected to be a key issue at U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting in Beijing this week.

Trump is said to be frustrated by the lack of progress in talks to reopen the strait, while domestic gasoline prices remain high. Therefore, Trump will ask Xi to "pressure" Iran into reaching a deal with the U.S. China is the largest buyer of Iranian crude oil and a vital economic lifeline for Tehran.

Rubio accompanied Trump on his visit to Beijing, along with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Trump is scheduled to meet with Xi on Thursday (May 14) and Friday (May 15).
